Call For Papers
The International Conference on Program Comprehension (ICPC) is the principal venue for works in the area of program comprehension. Topics of interest for all tracks include but are not limited to:
- Tool support for program comprehension;
- Novel visualization techniques and interfaces to support program comprehension, including searching, browsing and analyzing;
- Cognitive theories for program comprehension, including experiments, empirical studies, and case studies;
- Individual, collaborative, distributed, and global program comprehension;
- Comprehension of specific types of software systems, such as open/closed source, mobile applications, web-based systems, legacy systems, product lines, libraries, multi-threaded applications, and systems of systems;
- Comprehension in the context of diverse software process models and specific lifecycle activities, such as: maintenance, evolution, reengineering, migration, security, auditing, and testing;
- Comprehension of software artifacts;
- Empirical evaluations of program comprehension tools, techniques, and approaches;
- Human aspects in program comprehension;
- Comprehension and legal issues, such as due diligence, intellectual property, reverse engineering, and litigation;
- Issues and case studies in the transfer of program comprehension technology to industry.
Technical Research Track
The research track of ICPC 2016 promises to provide a quality forum for researchers and practitioners from academia, industry, and government to present and to discuss state-of-the-art results and best practices in the field of program comprehension. Submissions must not be longer than 10 pages for the main text, inclusive of figures, tables, appendices, and references.
The best Technical Research Track papers at ICPC'16 will be invited to be revised and extended for consideration in a special issue of the Journal of Software: Evolution and Process (JSEP) by Wiley.

Tool Demonstration Track
The Tool Demonstration Track provides an opportunity for live presentations of academic prototypes and industry tools. This track is a good opportunity for you to have active and lively discussions about your work to further the visibility of your tools. A prize (to be announced) will be offered to the best tool demo paper and presentation. Submissions must be at most 3 pages (2 page submissions are also welcome), inclusive of figures, tables, appendices, and references.
We highly encourage authors of other ICPC tracks to submit to the Tool Demonstration Track as well.
Submission Guidelines & Review and Evaluation Criteria Details
Less Details
Submission Guidelines:
Submissions of proposals for tool demonstration must
- adhere to the conference proceedings format (proceedings style);
- have a maximum of 3 pages including all text, figures and references (2 page submissions are also welcome).
- have a download link with instructions on how to install the tool.
- (optional) be accompanied by a 3-to-5 minute screencast, either with annotations or voice-over, that provides a concise version of the tool demo scenario.
The tool can be an early research prototype or a polished product ready for deployment. Papers about commercial tools are allowed, as long as the guidelines described above are followed. The screencast, if submitted, should be posted on YouTube (private, not shared), and its URL should be clearly mentioned in the paper. Optionally, the video could be hosted on the tool’s website, in which case this website should be referenced in the paper.
Review and Evaluation Criteria:
Each submission will be reviewed by the tool demonstration program committee. The committee will review each submission on its merits regarding the following criteria
- relevance to program comprehension
- clear design goals/requirements
- motivating the use cases of the tool and (if available) existing experiments or case studies using the tool
- novelty of the tool
- discussion of related work and tools
- quality and clarity of the demonstration scenario, as shown in the screencast (if submitted).

Paper Submission
All papers must conform, at time of submission, to the IEEE formatting guidelines. Submissions must be in PDF format and must be submitted online via the ICPC 2016 EasyChair conference system. Papers must not have been previously accepted for publication nor concurrently submitted for review in another journal, book, conference, or workshop. All accepted papers will be published in the conference electronic proceedings, and will also be available in the IEEE Digital Library. At least one author of the paper must register and present the paper/demo at the conference; otherwise the paper will be excluded from both the program and the proceedings.
